A little of what I do

On the last night of my fall show, I thought I'd share a little of what I do.

I am, by training, a Broadcast Journalist. I have done everything from report on camera to edit tapes (now it's all digital). Most recently and for the past five years, I have been producing. This means (simplified) I decide what and where stories go in a newscast. I edit content before it reaches the newsreaders' lips, sometimes including packages reporters produce.

But two years ago I left full-time work and am now freelance. I do only special projects such as the yearly NC Children's Promise Telethon, which raises money for UNC Children's Hospital. This is close to my heart since my son had heart surgery there and my daughter was treated for various ailments by their specialists as well. But it is also fun to do what is called "field producing," getting out of the studio and creating a show in the field.

Since its creation, I have been the producer of Friday Night Final, a weekly high school football show that, of course, runs only in the Fall on Friday nights. This year it is called Discount Tire Friday Night Final, and tonight is our last night! Tomorrow is Championship Day so I have a whole day of live coverage to produce, but I am happily on the way back to family and writing luxury.

Anyway, I don't know how much I'll be on here today through Sunday morning, so I thought I'd share a bit.

All in all, it makes me a great editor, so if you ever need a first reader, feel free to ask!

this sentence could bring you more than you actually wanted :))
When you invite people to send you their books and manuscripts, you might get in danger of becoming swamped by tones of really bad work. As someone who's in this business I've told you once before about the huge number of people who are overconfident in their writing skills. There are too many people who start writing not because their talent tells them so but because they are bored or have too much free time or just find writing a book the easiest solution to their financial problems. I really, really, really hope you won't stumble upon such people :)

  3. I'm with Dezmond...be careful what you wish for! :) Very generous of you, though.

I've always been really interested in the TV side of news--used to work on the print side a bit. I think TV would be fun.

  5. Well, I'm thinking of doing it for a bit of charge soon...I actually am good at it, and enjoy it. We'll see how it works out!

Show is going well, not as much work as I expected tonight...Tomorrow will be another story!
