Let's get Sappy! (it IS February)

I guess it's time for a little *love*fest here on Southern City Mysteries.  So everyone get sappy!

The topic of today's post is: What is your favorite part of blogging?

This came to me the other day as I was researching the rest of this month's 'Today in Literary History' blurbs.  I have explained before how important those are to me, as I feel the writers of the past laid foundation from which we all now work.  But this month the snippets of history have been sucking me in.  I can't just go to History.com, copy my ten words and be done.  This month I want to read the backstory.  So you say Dylan Thomas died of drink?  Well, let me research that some more...and I'm off, clicking away and learning.

And this brings us to my favorite part of blogging: learning.

I have learned about writing--tons about writing!  I have learned about grammar from the great Crystal Clear Proofing.  I have delved deeper into new genres, ones that, before, I might have skipped right over in the bookstore--SciFi, Steampunk, Urban Fantasy, and, yes, Romance.  I have learned how to change HTML code.  Whoa.  I know.

I have learned so much, but--and here is where it gets a bit sappy, so avert your eyes if you don't like that sort of thing--the biggest thing I have learned is what an incredible community of friends this big wide world can be.  And all you have to do is give a little bit of your time and knowledge, spend a few minutes visiting other people's sites, leaving comments like Victorian calling cards, and voila!  We have a community.

What is your favorite part of blogging?

  1. Connecting with other writers. You're right--it's a great community! (That's as sappy as I can get.)

  2. Connecting with others, both writers and every day bloggers. It's an amazing community and I am surprised that only after starting my blog a month ago that everyone is so interested in my writing and gives me nothing but amazing support! I love it!!

  3. I've also learned so much from blogging. What the whole process is before a book makes its way to me, either to edit or to read. And the connections. The friends I've made through blogging are so special! As Alan said, it IS a great community!

And thank you SO much for mentioning ME! Wow, that really makes me feel wonderful! And sappy! LOL! That's what you wanted, right? Well you succeeded!

See? It really is a great community full of wonderful people! ♥

  7. The sense of self worth I get when people comment on my blog. Helps with the raging insecurity, don'tcha know. ;)

No, you're right: it's the community. I started for the "platform," stuck around for the people.

  9. Everyone seemed to agree with the friendship and community piece, so I have to share this vignette from today. My son and I were reading his Usborne Children's Picture Atlas (great for kids if you're looking, he's only 4) and he kept asking me, "Who lives near the octopus? Who lives near the narwhal?" While I didn't know someone in every part of the world, I was excited to say I knew a few more because of this blogging community. Australia, various parts of Canada (though I can't remember from which provinces you all hail, Jemi, Elspeth, etc.), Alaska, Serbia...It was pretty amazing and not a little exciting. So, sappiness aside, I love this blog-thing!

  10. My second favorite thing is learning new stuff, like how to write the code so my blog URL after my name appears as a live link or what's happening in countries far away. My favorite thing, though, is meeting new people from all over the world, discovering our commonalities, and forming friendships.

Dez- Creativity, that's one part I missed here. And one part I get from your blog in particular.

  16. I love that people I admire and respect, care to hear what I have to say. And on the flip-side, that comments and observations I leave for them, in a small way, help them become better writers. Ying-yang personified.

And to get even more sappy...I love the fact that I smile so much more when I'm blogging.
